The Can We? Project

provides opportunities for students to cultivate both the mindset and skills for constructive dialogue across real and perceived differences.

Beliefs

We believe that young people have the desire and capacity to be civically engaged members of our communities, to lead conversations that bridge divides, and to work creatively and collaboratively across differences. We provide them with the skills and confidence to do so.

Vision

The Can We? Project envisions generations of young adults entering the world equipped with the skills to engage in constructive dialogue on the most pressing issues of the day.

Our Pursuits

  • Self- Reflection
Who am I? What do I believe and how did I come to believe that?
  • Empathy Towards Others
Who are You? What do you believe and how did you come to believe that?
  • Inquiry for Deeper Understanding
What questions can I ask to gain a deeper understanding of myself, others, or the topic?
  • Creative Collaboration
What can we work on together to affect positive change?

Where we work

The Can We? Project, founded by Waynflete School in 2018, began as a single weekend retreat serving 30 students at a camp in Maine. It has since grown into a program that now works directly each year with over 300 students and educators across rural, suburban, and urban communities in Maine and New Hampshire. In addition, student leaders in our partner schools are offering Can We?-inspired dialogue events for their peers, teachers, and communities.

“I plan to contribute to community efforts…

“I plan to contribute to community efforts to preserve and protect the beautiful environments in Maine.”

“I am thinking that this will shape my ability…

“I am thinking that this will shape my ability to debate in the future. I often have a hard time thinking about other people’s perspectives, and this helped a lot.”

“I am more hopeful towards the future…

“I am more hopeful towards the future, and I am honestly surprised that so many people I met are so similarly motivated. I think it was truly amazing to have this experience where I got to go out and communicate effectively about opinion and belief without stereotype or judgment.”

“I learned how to listen to people…

“I learned how to listen to people and respect them as a person not just judging by their ideas, and how to be an active listener and catch myself if I climb the ladder of inference.”

“At the time, I was a very polarized person…

“At the time, I was a very polarized person. I frequently debated with family, friends, and strangers, but my focus was almost always on “winning” rather than actually understanding or developing. I’ve come to appreciate the mission behind [Can We?] more than ever.”

“Everyone believes in a future where…

“Everyone believes in a future where they’re given a fair chance to be who they are. I felt much more seen than I ever have in my entire life.”

“That it’s important to listen just…

“That it’s important to listen just as much as you speak or want to be heard.”

“I learned a lot about how identity impacts…

“I learned a lot about how identity impacts what you believe. Everywhere I go, the people I talk to, the entire world influences what I believe.”
